Culturally Important Plants on the Georgia Coast
We are seeking an undergraduate student or recent graduate to assist with the development and digital publication of an Identification Guide for Culturally Important Plant Species on the Georgia Coast.
The intern will be responsible for:
- Conducting online library searches for information about plant species and their cultural uses and values;
- Communicating with Gullah Geechee community members;
- Writing summary descriptions of plants and their uses;
- Formatting the ID Guide for digital distribution (as downloadable PDF, html, or other app).
The ideal intern will bring an interest in Gullah Geechee culture, interest in the connections between people and plants, curiosity to learn by doing internet-based research, and interest in learning/previous experience/a creative side when it comes to designing and creating the layout for the ID guide.
The successful applicant will demonstrate abilities to: summarize information and write clearly, work independently and reliably; and complete tasks on schedule. Priority will be given to applicants who have access to housing on the Georgia coast.
The intern will receive mentorship and supervision from Christa Hayes (Natural History Interpretation and Education Consultant; formerly Conservation Manager at Jekyll Island Authority and Non-fiction Editor at University of Georgia Press) and Elizabeth King (Associate Professor of Ecosystem Ecology and Management at University of Georgia). The intern will earn co-authorship on the guide, and will build their skills in botany, natural history, bio-cultural conservation, environmental education, science writing, and desktop/digital publishing.
Start date: June 1, 2023 (flexible)
Duration 8-10 weeks (flexible)
Rate: $15.00/hour, full-time vs. part-time is negotiable. We will work with the selected intern to find a schedule and goals that align with their time commitment.
